Centre for Research in Social Policy

The Centre for Research in Social Policy (CRSP), Loughborough University, conducts research which contributes to debates about fairness and disadvantage and influences social policy.

CRSP’s work focuses on:

  1. Poverty and income studies, including:
    - the Minimum Income Standard for the United Kingdom, produced by CRSP;
    - substantive studies of how households experience poverty and exclusion at different times of their lives, especially in childhood and in later life;
    - studies of debt and financial inclusion.

  2. Social welfare and service delivery, including:
    - evaluation of policies and services, including those of DWP and Jobcentre Plus;
    - assessments of the accessibility of services and opportunities; and
    - localism and the role of the community, voluntary and social enterprise sector in service delivery.

  3. Energy and Green Social Policy, including:
    - investigation of the relationship between sustainable consumption and living standards, and
    - analysis of fuel poverty.

CRSP is one of the UK’s longest established social policy research centres, with a track record for delivering timely and reliable evidence and practical policy recommendations.  For nearly 30 years, we have held a reputation for innovation and impact, combining the rigour, expertise and inventiveness to be expected from a research centre in an internationally renowned university.

Innovation: we specialise in highly-tailored research design, using cutting-edge and pioneering methodologies as required, drawing on a wide range of qualitative , quantitative and analytic approaches, including narrative biographical and longitudinal qualitative research, advanced statistical analysis, rapid and systematic evidence review, social network analysis, and geographical mapping.

Impact: we are committed to producing research which contributes to debates about fairness and disadvantage and influences social policy.  This includes ensuring that every CRSP project fully addresses funders’ evidence needs and delivers useful insights and actionable recommendations.  We pride ourselves on producing clear, accessible, well targeted research findings, and we are skilled in communication and knowledge exchange strategies.
