Drugs and Alcohol Misuse as Barriers to Employment

The research, which was commissioned by the Department for Work and Pensions, aimed to improve understanding of the problem drugs and alcohol addictions pose to job-search, and gaining and retaining employment amongst working age benefit clients. It seeks to draw together existing evidence and generate better insight into the types and the needs of support services for people with substance abuse problems. The research consisted of two stages:

i) A literature review and secondary analysis of the General Household Survey and the British Crime Survey; and

ii) Qualitative research with jobcentre staff, representatives from organisations involved in supporting people with substance abuse problems, and clients.
